Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Vancouver Business Network meetup for the first time and met millionaire blogger John Chow, also for the first time. John was last week’s keynote speaker and he revealed a ton of valuable information on how to power up any business’ online sales.
For those of you not familiar with John, he’s been a blogger for over 15 years or so, and has been doing internet marketing for almost as long. John is a dynamic person who’s found a way to build up his blogging into a million dollar a year business while only working a few hours a day!
How does he do it?
Well, the things he talked about started with how he started his blog as a way of keeping friends and family back in China up to date on his family’s life in Vancouver. Then he started his own online business and started blogging about how it was doing, and his blog started seeing massive increases in traffic whenever he’d write about his online business results.
So now his blog is starting to become very popular and he started searching for ways to monetize it. He started with the conventional wisdom of putting Google Adsense on his blog and he did make a bit of money off of that, but not much. He tried affiliate programs like Amazon’s and made a bit more money from those too, but still not much. He then looked further into it and saw that the real money is on the back end, the follow up purchases that he got no commission off of from these affiliate programs.
What else could he do then to get some serious income from his blog?
How about getting in on those back end sales. So that’s what he did. First off, he started building his own list, so he could promote his products to them over and over again. He owned his own customers, rather then just the affiliate program owners also owning the customers.
Plus, he started publishing his own books, and joined programs that also offered commissions on the back end, on the repeat sales, and high-end sales. He looked for programs that had continuity, meaning he’d get paid his commission every month for as long as his customers remained customers of the provider of that affiliate program.
This is when his money started to pour in a bit more. Still, something was missing, something that the real money makers were doing that he wasn’t. So he looked at their systems and found – automation. Sales pages, opt-in pages (where there is only 2 choices, sign up, or leave the page), thank you pages, upsells, downsells, cross sells, and much more, all fully automated, that’s what he found. He went to work setting up his own online sales system and that’s when his income skyrocketed. Those are the systems he’s built upon to get to where he is today – a million dollar a year blogger.
Do you have a product or service you promote? If so, how do you currently promote it? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
